DWYER FAMILY DESERVE INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION INTO MICHAEL'S DEATH - ALAN KELLY
- Information from Bolivia cannot be trusted
Speaking from the European Parliament where the Dwyer family met with MEPs, Labour's Alan Kelly has called for support for an independent investigation into the killing of Michael Dwyer in Bolivia.
"An independent investigation into the killing of Irish Citizen Michael Dwyer is the only possible solution to this most serious issue,"
"Michael Dwyer was a loving and much loved son of the Dwyer family,"
"He was a loving, caring person who came from a multi-cultural background,"
"Last year he was tragically shot dead in Bolivia and the quality of the information emerging from authorities there is suspect,"
"As an Irish and EU family they are entitled to answers,"
"I am delighted that Irish MEPs will support the family in this endeavour and we will be writing to the EU's High representative for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton, to support the family,"
"We wish to support them because they are entitled to proper answers,"
"The number of contradictory information is astounding and only an independent international investigation will fix this,"
"Please note some of the following,"
Ø From photos that the Bolivian authorities allowed the media to take at the Hotel and subsequent interviews with the hotel manager, it is clear that there was no ‘shoot out’ as originally claimed by the Authorities. This claim was repeated by Bolivia's ambassador to the UK, Ms Beatriz Souviron at the Irish inquest into Michael’s death, which took place in October 2009.
Ø The Hotel Manager has stated that the elite police squad entered the hotel at approx 3am on the morning of the 16th April 2009 and cut all security cameras before proceeding to kill three men in their bedrooms, one of whom was Michael.
Ø There was a 15-hour delay between Michael’s death and the autopsy in Bolivia being performed. Due to this delay, it seems possible that forensic evidence has been compromised.
Ø During the 15-hour delay, armed police guarded Michael’s body from inside the bedroom. This would greatly increase the chances of contaminating the results of swabs taken from Michael’s body.
Ø Delay in ballistics examination: the ballistics report states that the date of the ballistics examination was on 22nd April – six days after the shooting.
Ø Lack of preservation of scene of shooting: the report states that the scene had been cleaned.
Ø Lack of identification of firearms used: nowhere in the ballistics report is it identified what type of firearms / ammunition the police used or what they believe was used by others in the killing of the three men.
Ø According to photos in the media taken immediately after the shooting, there is no sign of any weapon beside Michael.
"The family are determined to find answers which is why they are in the European Parliament today,"
"As Michael was a European Citizen, I would hope that the EU can support the efforts of the Irish government in securing an independent investigation into the matter as it will be the only thing that will give the family some peace of mind,"
